History:

Since 1968 the zoo Gettorf runs as a family zoo, now in its third Generation out. On the site of a former gravel pit before it all began as a private hobby. The skilled farmer Karl-Heinz Bumann who was successful as a carrier after the war, could implement here a long cherished dream into reality and create a small private game park. Ornamental poultry, sheep, goats and some deer were the first inhabitants of the animal park. Over time, the number and types of animals kept growing and gradually even the first exotic animals arrived at Gettorf. Since the people of Gettorf increasingly approached to the private zoo operator with the request, but to open his little zoo to visitors, Karl-Heinz Bumann decided in May 1968 to open it regularly. At this time, from the initial farm animal park a zoo arrised with exotic monkeys, this group continues to shape the image of the zoo. The conversion of the former pheasant house to the monkey house was the first step on this path. Today in Gettorf are numerous monkeys from over 10 species from the squirrel monkeys and mighty Emperor Tamarins to the large chimpanzee. Gradually the offer of the zoo was expanded after the opening. In the 1970's the first bird house - the tropical hall - has been built, at the same time also the zoo cafe was errected, first according to the style of the time as a bungalow with roof terrace. At the beginning of the 80s the second large tropical house was built with the bird paradise Hall, that in addition to numerous aviaries with exotic birds also houses a large collection of cacti and palms. The rest of the stock in Gettorf got with time even more and more exotic. In addition to monkeys and tropical birds here were also soon zebras, antelopes, flamingos, emus and tapirs. To date, in the meantime the children of the founder of the second generation privately owned zoo to its purpose holds to bring visitors amidst landscaped grounds is a very wide exotic animal life close. Thus in 2000, the public feedings of the lemurs were introduced into their enclosure, where visitors can get close to the lemurs. In 2007, the concept was expanded with great success on the Kangaroos. Other species may be close partially explored in the walk-in enclosures.

Another walk-in enclosure actuality is for water fowl and the European crane. The zoo has two educational wood paths, the first we are now entering. Let us follow the path a little more straight ahead on the left hand we have a pond for turtlesand on the right, an enclosure for australian animals like the tammar wallaby. Across the kangaroos we have the aviary for parakeets, but it's also the home for the large macaws, cockatoos and beautiful pheasants. Some of these aviaries you can even enter! Now we've reachedat the prairie dogs, the neighbors are different pets. Especially poultry but also four horn sheep live here.
